VPN with the OpenVPN GUI

This documentation describes the configuration and usage of OpenVPN with Perfect Privacy using the OpenVPN GUI software for Windows.

  1. Download the OpenVPN installer from the community download page at openvpn.net and install the software.
  2. Download the Perfect Privacy configuration and unpack the zip file into the directory C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\.

In this documentation we are using the grouped UDP configuration. If you want to use TCP connection or single server configuration, you can find these configuration files in the download area.

You can access the OpenVPN GUI over the Windows traybar. You may need to click on the up-arrow to show additional traybar icons. The OpenVPN icon is a scomputer screen with a lock (red circle in the screenshot on the left).

With a right-click on the OpenVPN icon, a list of all servers will be displayed. Please note that you will receive an error if there are no valid configuration files in C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\.

Select a server of your choice and click on “Connect”.

You will be asked for your Perfect Privacy username and password when the connection is being established. Click on “Save password” to save the credentials.

The OpenVPN connection is now established. To drop the VPN tunnel, click on “Disconnect” for the connected server.

CAUTION: If you are using VPN with the OpenVPN GUI you are not protected against IP, DNS, WebRTC and other leaks. For this reason we recommend using the Perfect Privacy VPN Manager.
